Mattress care tips

Keep your new sleep set in good condition by following these suggested care guidelines:

Mattress care

  • Some new mattresses should be turned and/or rotated to help smooth out contours and equalize the wear and tear that normally occurs.
  • Do not use the handles to carry or support the full weight of the mattress. Typically, the handles are designed to help you position the mattress over the foundation. If used improperly, the handles may pull out of the sides and damage the fabric.
  • Vacuuming is the only recommended way to clean a mattress. A quality, washable mattress pad will help keep the sleep set free from stains. If you are determined to tackle a stain, use mild soap with cold water and rub lightly. Don’t ever soak a mattress or foundation.
  • Twice a year check for signs of wear and tear to see if it might be time to invest in a new mattress set.

It may be time for a new mattress if:

  • You wake up with pain, stiffness or soreness
  • You had your best night’s sleep somewhere other than in your own bed
  • Your mattress shows visible signs of wear and tear
  • Your mattress has outlived its effective comfort life (8-10 years)

Practical tips

  • The durability of your mattress depends on the way you will care for it. For maximum efficiency you should place your mattress on a bed base specially designed for the mattress in question or on a sturdy bed frame like a metal bed frame with appropriate support in the middle (roller or metal glides), a platform bed with central support, or a bed frame with a headboard and footing with central support. The warranty is often dependent on these factors.
  • A good pillow is also a factor to consider in the comfort of your mattress.
  • A quilted mattress pad is also recommended, creating a barrier between the acidity produced by the body and the mattress therefore preventing the early deterioration of the fabric.

The Difference Between a Body Impressions and a Sagging Mattress

  • Body indentations in your mattress may give you the false impression that your mattress is sagging. This is, however, not the case. The new generation of mattresses are designed to follow the body’s contours to provide the best comfort. What may seem to be a manufacturing defect is in fact simply your mattress adjusting to your body.

  • You should take some precautions in order to prevent your mattress from sagging. In the first three months after you purchase a new mattress you should flip it over or rotate it every two weeks. However, after the three-month period you will only need to repeat this every eight weeks.

The Importance of a Good-Quality Mattress Cover

As we sleep, our body loses about ½ a litre of body fluid every night. A good mattress and pillow cover is therefore a necessity as it will protect and keep your mattress and pillow clean.

A mattress cover will protect your mattress from excess humidity and wick away moisture. You should choose your cover the exact size of your mattress.

The Importance of Choosing a Good Pillow

Are you waking up with a bad headache? Stiffness in your neck? Aches? You may not have the right pillow.

A pillow will support your neck and spine, so it’s important to take the time to choose the perfect one, and to change it regularly about every 2 years.

Choosing a good pillow can make all the difference on how well you sleep, however, without a good mattress and bed base to go along with it, you will not see much difference. This is why it is important to have the perfect sleep set to help you sleep soundly and comfortably.
